Fiji-born Vereimi Vakatawa will be the first Fijian to don the Tricolour jersey for the France 7s team this weekend in Tokyo.

Named in the France7 squad for the Asian leg of the IRB World Sevens series to play in Tokyo and Hong Kong, Vakatawa also donned the Tricolour jersey for the France15s team last year.

The 21-year old who currently plays with the Racing Métro rugby club in Paris, started his rugby career at his home village of Naluwai in the highlands of Naitasiri, Fiji.

He continued to play rugby through to high school when he joined the Nasinu Panthers Club. He went on to be selected to be part of Fiji’s national U-18 team to tour Australia but withdrew to join Racing Métro 92.

Vakatawa, who had been recruited to join Racing Métro 92 by Sireli Bobo was also mentored by former Flying Fijian, Simon Raiwalui.

This weekend in Tokyo, France7 is in the same pool as Fiji, Samoa and USA.
